Temporary teacher of violin Job at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School – in Elstree
TEMPORARY TEACHER OF VIOLIN
1.5 – 2 DAYS PER WEEK TO START SEPTEMBER 2021, FOR ONE ACADEMIC
YEAR, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION
Haberdashers’ is a boys’ independent day school situated near Elstree in
Hertfordshire. There are 1300 pupils from 7-18 years old, and music plays a
considerable part in the life of the school.
The Music department is amongst the strongest in the country. The subject is very
popular and the boys are academically able and well-motivated. The instrumental
teachers are all well-qualified specialists and the department has traditionally offered
considerable flexibility and room for initiative to colleagues, many of whom enjoy a
measure of delegated responsibility within the department. The appointed candidate
will be expected to play an important role in further developments within the
department and the life of the school.
At present there are five full-time teachers and twenty-two instrumental staff
working in the extremely well-resourced Music School. Teaching takes place in sound-
proofed teaching studios of a substantial size, each of which provides a useful base
with ample storage and good access to shared resources. The departmental
timetables are organised by the Music administrator. The Print Room, excellent
School Library and wide-ranging ICT facilities support the work of the department.
Academic Music results are outstanding and this is reflected in boys’ attainment in
extra-curricular music. Over 600 boys of all ages learn instruments, either in small
groups or as individual pupils. There are four orchestras; three wind bands, a big
band, jazz ensemble, many guitar and percussion ensembles and numerous chamber
groups and choirs. The philosophy of the department is to include rather than to
cream off the best.
We seek an inspirational violin teacher for between 1.5 and 2 days a week. Our string
teachers comprise 3 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello and one double bass who teach all ages
from 7 – 18. String playing is very strong in the school with over 200 orchestral string
players. The typical day will be a mixture of solos and group teaching as well as
coaching chamber string ensembles. Opportunities for coaching the orchestras may
be available for the right candidate. The standard attained is exemplified by the
Symphonic repertoire from 2020, which included Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.
Most of the instrumental pupils enter for Associated Board examinations that are held
at the school three times a year. Approximately 16 evening concerts and 20
lunchtime recitals are held during the academic year. We have frequently performed
in the Barbican, sometimes jointly with Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls, with
whom we share our site.
To fit with the extraordinarily tight rooming schedules of the department, the lessons
are likely to need to be given on a Thursday and Friday, at least initially.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wishes to be part of a highly vibrant
music-making department. There may be the possibility of significant additional
responsibility for the right candidate, including joint projects with our sister school.
If you wish to discuss the post, informally, with the Director of Music, Richard
Osmond, please telephone him at the school [020 8266 1845].
Your completed application form should be sent to Human Resources
