Petroineos Refining and Trading is one of the largest independent refiners trading in Europe. We are seeking a Machinery Team Leader to join our Engineering Team on a temporary basis.

The purpose of this role;

Responsible for leading the Machinery engineering group and the competence of the rotating equipment engineering capability in support of the Refinery Assets. Responsible for the quality of machinery input into all projects and plant modifications, including the necessary input into Project SORs and QA. Ensure consistency of approach to rotating machinery monitoring and maintenance across all PIMSL Assets.
Responsible for the scope and subsequent delivery of TAR activities related to rotating machinery.

Key Accountabilities include;

  • Lead a team of machinery engineers, giving technical direction and setting clear objectives and ensuring delivery of objectives in order to meet the safety and reliability needs of the business. Objectives need to reflect the local needs of the Asset Delivery Managers
  • Manage the health, wellbeing and competence of the team to guarantee the availability of technical resource to meet the short and long term demands of the business
  • Manage the competence and training requirements of the machinery engineering team to ensure the Refinery has an adequate competence profile and that the continuous development needs of the team are met
  • Ensure the machinery engineering team comply with the Refinery inspection schedules to give assurance that all plant rotating equipment are endorsed and safe to operate
  • Drive the vulnerability and reliability processes within the team to ensure that business threats and risks are identified and managed in a way that ever reduces the risks to the business and that reliability is continually improving
  • Routinely engages in cross group networking in order to share and gain best engineering practices and thus promote best in class engineering capability within the Petroineos assets in Grangemouth
  • The role includes the attendance at a number of regular meetings, including, quarterly PM review, Weekly team meetings (chair), quarterly performance one to ones with team members
  • Responsible for the development of the Machinery TAR worklist, to ensure that the business can deliver against the 5 year TAR plan. This requires regular demonstration of progress
  • Monitor and implement necessary improvements to machinery preventive and predictive strategies to ensure maintenance is effective and efficient. Routinely monitor the status of mechanical PMs to ensure that all suspended PMs can be justified. The lead Machinery engineer is required to endorse all suspended PMs
  • Provide mentorship to the team as a whole, but specifically those on a graduate training programme, in order to ensure that the individuals successfully achieve chartered status
  • The Lead Machinery engineer shall be the single machinery technical approver for all CAPEX project SORs. They shall represent the maintenance and engineering team in all project support, in order to guarantee consistency of approach to major projects. They will be responsible for the delivery of all project maintenance and engineering needs (eg technical details, spares, maintenance routines and inspection schedules. They will also be the only author of machinery project SORs where the project SPA is required to be within the maintenance department
  • Drive compliance with business RCFA KPIs, encouraging regular use of such techniques in order to drive out risk and threats to the business
  • The post holder will be the owner of the machinery Asset Life Plans and the owner of any obsolescence, remediation strategies. These strategies and plans shall be used annually to develop the annual EM budget submission for machinery scope
  • Lead the Refinery pump reliability forum in order to deliver a continually improving pump MTBF. This includes ensuring compliance with the Refinery pump repair and maintenance strategy


  • Professional engineer, degree qualified and chartered
  • Vast engineering experience, post chartership, predominantly in the oil refining industry
  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization
  • High level of drive, motivation and commitment
  • Willingness to take ownership and responsibility for major engineering and maintenance issues
  • Logical and practical with the ability to think laterally with advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to manage, provide leadership and provide engineering guidance to a multi disciplined team
  • A detailed understanding of technical engineering disciplines and appropriate engineering standards
  • Business awareness and sound commercial understanding
  • Track record for successful delivery of technical projects, TARs and major plant upsets

This role is a temporary role and will be offered on a PAYE basis. The rate for the role is between circa £25ph – £30ph dependent on experience.
