Engineering Specialist Job at UK Government – Department for Transport in London
Job Description
Your role will be key to ensuring that the UK’s interests are represented at international meetings, including at the United Nations, providing support, leadership, innovation and improvement of vehicle standards.
These roles offer a unique chance to develop your career within the DfT and Government, and to apply your engineering expertise and a creative approach to drive forward global vehicle improvements. You will be responsible for shaping future standards for vehicles alongside a dedicated team of engineers. You will be involved with taking a leading role in policy development and delivery.
Responsibilities
Roles and responsibilities
- Supporting policy development and delivery for vehicle standards, providing specialist advice to DfT Ministers and across Government
- Supporting preparations for (with opportunities to attend) international meetings and conferences, representing the UK’s interests and building relationships
- Supporting strategic programmes and research projects to deliver the innovation and improvements required for vehicle safety in the UK and internationally
- Providing technical engineering expertise within the International Vehicle Standards division for ad-hoc projects
- Applying specialist knowledge to respond to enquiries from members of the public, the media and Ministers

Additional information
We are following current government guidelines and working remotely, if successful you will be provided with IT equipment to carry out your duties remotely. Once we are able to return to office, we will provide you with full notice of this.
Once usual service resumes, there may be some instances where travel is required. This will usually occur 1-2 times a month to attend meetings, this will include some overnight stays and potential international travel. You will be provided with full notice of this.
Due to the nature of this role, you are required to hold a qualification at degree level or similar academic/technical qualification in Science or Engineering to be successful.
About you
To be successful, excellent interpersonal skills are pivotal to this role. You will have the ability to provide guidance and robust recommendations to internal stakeholders, where your outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills will enable you to influence and challenge at all levels.
You are someone that has superb time management skills, being able to work autonomously and remain motivated when dealing with challenging workloads. You would be described as a diligent person, being able to concentrate on your work and complete your tasks even when under pressure.
With IVS being an area of the DfT recognised for its engineering professionalism, you will develop the skills and experience required to achieve professional registration as a Chartered Engineer or similar. IVS actively encourages technical training where necessary and will also fund membership to a relevant professional institution.
