Chief Fire Officer and Executive Director Job at Suffolk County Council in Ipswich
Are you looking for a leadership opportunity in an authority with a great reputation?
We are looking for a Chief Fire Officer and Executive Director who has a strong track record of visible leadership, personal values and the vision to build on our successes and focus on the areas where we want to be better. You will have a significant impact on the leadership and culture of our service, our 700+ firefighters and staff, and more widely across the Council.
You will have substantial leadership and senior management experience in diverse and complex functions, as well as the ability to lead and deliver transformational, innovative and sustainable change. You will use this experience to lead the development of the Authority’s next IRMP (2022-25) and to do so in a way that is aligned to the emerging work of the NFCC Community Risk Programme and new Fire Standards.
As Chief Fire Officer for Suffolk you will have the operational skills and experience to successfully command complex major incidents both at the incident ground and within co-ordinating group structures, alongside multi-agency partners. You will be required to provide a response base which will enable them to undertake their strategic operational command functions from Ipswich and to do so within sixty minutes of being notified.
In our first HMICFRS inspection, we were recorded as ‘good’ in each of the three inspection areas and we have a strong national presence for a relatively small fire and rescue service. Our two previous Chief Fire Officers enjoyed successful spells working within Suffolk and progressed to a national role with the NFCC, proving Suffolk is a great place to work as a Chief Fire Officer.
The role will be based in Ipswich at our shared headquarters with Suffolk County Council. You will work closely with the Cabinet Member for Fire and Public Safety; the rest of the Council’s Cabinet Members and Councillors; the Council’s corporate leadership team (which you will be a member of); the Heads of Service for Trading Standards and Emergency Planning and the senior management team of the fire and rescue service.
We value the benefits of senior leaders having roles and influence beyond Suffolk. You will be expected to work closely with regional fire and rescue service Chief Fire Officers and senior teams, developing regional solutions to resolve local issues. Once you have been in role for a short period, we expect you to take on a national role within the National Fire Chief’s Council and ensure that the benefits of the NFCC work, and your leadership within it, are brought to bear in Suffolk.
