Air and Space Operations Specialist

You will receive role specific training at RAF Shawbury and on successful completion receive on the job training at the Air Traffic Control Tower at RAF Coningsby. Once qualified you will work as part of a team of Air Traffic Controllers and ASOS within a dynamic environment. You will be expected to use a radio to control vehicles and people using the airfield, provide safety checks of air systems prior to take-off and landing and conduct administrative tasks using computer systems to enable the safe and expeditious control of air traffic. You will operate alone as the Runway Controller or as part of the Visual Control Room team. You will also work within the Approach room (radar room) conducting administrative tasks and talking with people from flying Squadrons, military and civilian airfield users and briefing groups of people about safely operating on the airfield. You will be expected to act as the Duty Driver, undertaking driving duties deemed necessary by the air traffic Supervisor. During the working day you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of positions.

ASOS operate on a day and night shift cycle within the Air Traffic Control Tower and can also work during the daily flying window during both day and night flying. As a guide, day flying is often 0800 to 1700 and night flying 1300 to 2359.

Once you have experience you may have the opportunity to manage the other Specialists working on the shift.

Responsibilities

Attend mandatory annual briefings and training sessions that enable you to operate, these include a security briefing, diversity and inclusion training, human factors training and flare pistol training.

Operate as the Runway Controller, working alone conducting safety checks of air systems prior to take-off and landing.

Operate as the Visual Control Room ASOS, providing support to Air Traffic Controllers controlling Air systems taxiing and flying above the airfield. Also using a radio to control vehicles and people on the airfield.

Operate within the Approach room conducting administrative tasks to support air operations.

Operate as the switchboard ASOS, making and receiving phone calls.

Operate as the ATC driver, you will require a valid UK driving licence.

Maintain standards both professional and personal; lead by example.

You must be able to climb stairs as this is the only access to the working areas within the Tower.

During shift work you may be required to remain within the Tower for the duration of the shift.
