Job Title Assistant Accountant

Reports to Accountant

Purpose of the role

Supporting the accountant and the Commission for ensuring the Finance function operates effectively and efficiently in support of the Commission’s objectives and goals, working pro-actively to identify areas for improvement and taking appropriate action in accordance with the Commission’s policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the preparing the annual budget in line with the Business and Corporate Plans and allocated resources;
  • Completing bank reconciliations
  • Supporting the monthly reporting requirements of the department
  • Processing invoices, accruals, prepayment and other journals
  • Handing purchase order queries and completing purchase orders
  • Processing staff expenses claims
  • Maintaining the nominal ledger coding list
  • Processing the GPC transactions
  • Reconciling balance sheet accounts
  • Supporting the internal and external audits
  • Monitoring and reporting on the expenditure against budget
  • Carrying out administrative tasks including dealing with the post and scanning invoices and other material
  • Assisting with implementing management and financial accounting policies, procedures and systems, reviewing their effectiveness and efficiency and developing them as necessary;
  • Assisting with the completion of the annual statutory accounts on a timely basis;
  • Assisting with the management of the fixed asset register, ensuring depreciation and revaluation are appropriately calculated;
  • Undertaking project work to improve the Commission’s financial effectiveness, efficiency and economy;
  • Complying with the Commission’s security and other policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as required.

Key Tasks

Specific tasks and priorities will be determined on an annual and rolling basis to reflect the Commission’s then current and projected requirements.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Currently pursuing a career in accountancy
  • At least 1 years’ experience of working in a similar role
  • Detailed oriented, organised with experience of the MS Office products particularly excel
  • Data entry experience
  • Experience in the use of accounting packages, preferably Sage 200
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Experience of working within a team
  • Knowledge of public sector accounting requirements would also be desirable
